2021 Hongger Land Art Season On-site review

2021年7月20日至28日，“红格尔大地艺术季”在内蒙古四子王旗红格尔草原顺利举行。由艺术家杨德忠发起，以邀请的方式聚集了35位来自包括来自北京、沈阳、成都、合肥和内蒙古的优秀艺术家，同时特别邀请批评家王春辰到场，与艺术家们进行了深入的沟通和互动。在开幕仪式上，由学术主持王春辰宣布正式活动名称：“红格尔大地艺术季”，并描绘了持续举办第二届、第三届等未来愿景。参与的35位艺术家在持续7天的活动期间，在红格尔草原的营地中陆续进行了创作，以草原、沙漠、山丘、河流、天空、星斗等地貌为背景，立足于当地环境及文化特质，创作了一批形式多样的优秀作品，呈现在草原上形成独特的景观。

From July 20 to 28, 2021, the Hongger Land Art Festival was held on the Hongger Grassland in Siziwang Banner, Inner Mongolia. Initiated by artist Yang Dezhong, the invitational event brought together 35 distinguished artists from Beijing, Shenyang, Chengdu, Hefei and Inner Mongolia, and specially invited critic Wang Chunchen to take part in in-depth dialogue with the artists.

At the opening ceremony, serving as academic host, Wang Chunchen formally announced the event’s title—“Hongger Land Art Festival”—and outlined a vision for continuing the project into second, third and future editions.

Over the course of seven days, the 35 participating artists produced a diverse body of work at the festival camp on the Hongger Grassland. Drawing on the local environment and cultural character—and using the grassland, desert, hills, rivers, sky and stars as their backdrop—they created a range of works that together formed a distinctive landscape across the steppe.

开幕仪式在7月28日下午5点举行，由红格尔大地艺术发起人杨德忠、批评家王春辰、策展人赵希、以及艺术家代表陈宇飞、周斌、于伯公为此次活动致辞。在所有艺术家和观众的见证下完成了牛圈美术馆挂牌仪式。

The opening ceremony took place at 5:00 p.m. on July 28. Yang Dezhong, initiator of the Hongger Land Art Festival, critic Wang Chunchen, curator Zhao Xi, and artist representatives Chen Yufei, Zhou Bin, and Yu Bogong delivered remarks for the event. In the presence of all artists and audience members, the Herd Stall Art Museum was officially inaugurated with a plaque-unveiling ceremony.

Remarks by Yang Dezhong, founder of the Honggeer Land Art Festival and artist

杨德忠说到：“这次活动的初衷就是希望建立一个属于草原的艺术现场，希望吸引更多的艺术力量进来，共同打造一个开放的、自由的、原生态的，适应草原性格的独特场所，所以红格尔草原艺术部落和牛圈美术馆就应用而生，而且我相信它一定具有强大的生命力。”

Yang Dezhong said:

“The original intention of this event was to create an art scene that truly belongs to the grassland. We hope to draw in more artists and creative energy to build, together, a unique venue — open, free, and ecologically authentic — one that fits the character of the grassland. In that spirit the Grassland Art Collective andthe Herd Stall Art Museum naturally came into being, and I believe they will possess strong vitality.”

Remarks by Chinese Critic and Curator Wang Chunchen

王春辰：红格尔草原作为一个开放的空间，足以吸引各地感兴趣的艺术家不断提方案、提设想，保证自然环境的前提下，在滩地、沙地、土坡上进行一系列的创作，坚持两三年肯定会大不一样。我自己认为北方应该有这样的气魄，需要有能和自然产生深刻对话的东西，要有有力量的艺术。希望在这片土地产生属于这片土地的艺术。而且这个地方的历史非常厚重，是容易让人产生想象的，比如匈奴、拓跋、辽、金、元等等；同时也拥有着国际的学术话语，游牧、自然、大地、全球化等等，这样的东西是带有永恒性的。而且这次河南的水患，就给我们提出来城市化、互联网、信息化是有自身问题的。所以回到原生态、自然化，来到这里能产生更多的思想和创造力。希望我们在座的各位不仅仅是一个个艺术家，而是充满想象、充满力量、充满智慧的一批思考者。

Wang Chunchen said:

“The Honggeer Grassland, as an open space, is enough to draw people from all over to keep putting forward proposals and ideas. On the premise of protecting the natural environment, we can carry out a series of creations on the flats, sandy areas and earthen slopes. If we keep at it for two or three years, the place will be markedly different. In my view, the North should show such boldness. We need works that can enter into a deep dialogue with nature—art with real force. I hope the art that emerges on this land will truly belong to this land.

This place is steeped in history—it readily fires the imagination: the Xiongnu, the Tuoba, the Liao, the Jin, the Yuan. At the same time, it speaks to an international scholarly discourse: nomadism, nature, the earth, globalisation—themes with a timeless quality. The recent flooding in Henan reminds us that urbanisation, the internet and digitisation carry intrinsic problems. A return to the ecological and the natural—coming here—can spark more thought and creativity. I hope all of us present are not only individual artists, but a cohort of thinkers filled with imagination, strength and wisdom.”

Remarks by Zhao Xi,an emerging curator

赵希说到：“这次活动从7月20日启动到今天完整的呈现，来自全国各地的35位艺术家和1个艺术小组在在极短的几天时间内，在这样的特殊场域中创作了一批让人惊喜的作品，这些作品都被留在了草原，而且会持续跟这个地方进行互动，是很有意义的过程，特别感谢所有艺术家的付出。”

Zhao Xi said:

“From its launch on July 20 to today’s full presentation, 35 artists and one art collective from across the country have, in just a few short days, created an impressive body of work within this unique setting. These works have all been left on the grassland, where they will continue to interact with the place. It has been a truly meaningful process, and I would like to express my special thanks to all the artists for their dedication.”

艺术家代表陈宇飞老师致辞

Remarks by Chen Yufei, artist representative

陈宇飞讲到：“这次草原的项目让我们能够进行在地的思考，在自然中创造，跟本地的人文、地理、材料进行一系列对话。这次我是做了两件作品，都是在这里生成的，从合肥出发来这之前，做了十几个方案。但是来到这样的环境中，在跟这里不断进行互动的过程中，就被陆续否定了，来自草原的特殊气场给我的创作赋予了新的能量。特别感谢主办方的给予的这次机会，通过这样的活动也跟其他艺术家有了更过学习和交流的过程，谢谢。”

Chen Yufei said:

“This grassland project has enabled us to think in a site-specific way, to create within nature, and to engage in a series of dialogues with the local culture, geography and materials. On this occasion I made two works, both generated here. Before leaving Hefei I had prepared more than ten proposals, but once I arrived in this environment and kept interacting with it, those plans were gradually abandoned. The special energy of the grassland gave new vitality to my creation. I am especially grateful to the organisers for giving me this opportunity, which also allowed me to learn from and exchange with other artists. Thank you.”

艺术家代表周斌老师致辞

Remarks by Zhou Bin, artist representative

周斌讲到：“来到草原的这些天做了很多的作品方案，按我的经验来说应该没问题，前面也做了很多的方案，但是来之后呢，草原的气场让我觉的自己根本就不存在，所以前后否定了很多的方案。但直到昨天晚上，我觉得我的气场只能放在那边那个公厕里边，在那样一个小的空间是能把握的。所以，我希望如果下次还有机会来草原的话，希望有一件作品方案，能适合在拥有这样巨大气场的草原上实施，感谢所有组织者付出的辛苦。这是我第一次到内蒙古，这是一次难得的机会，也有很多的感受。今天下午是第一次看到一只羊慢慢变成案板上的羊肉，晚上这个羊肉又会分享给大家，自然是一个循环的过程，所以感谢大自然，谢谢大家。”

Zhou Bin said:

“During these days on the grassland, I drafted many proposals for works. Based on my past experience, they should have worked out fine. I had already prepared a number of plans beforehand, but once I arrived here, the immense energy of the grassland made me feel as if I did not exist at all. As a result, I rejected many of my earlier ideas. It was only last night that I realized my own energy could only be placed in that small public restroom over there—because in such a confined space, I felt I could truly manage it.

So, I hope that if I have another chance to come to the grassland, I can create a work that is truly suited to the vast and powerful aura of this place. I want to thank all the organizers for their hard work. This is my first time in Inner Mongolia, a rare opportunity, and it has given me many impressions.

This afternoon, for the first time, I witnessed a living sheep slowly becoming mutton on the chopping board, and later this evening that mutton will be shared among us. Nature itself is a cycle. For this, I thank nature. Thank you, everyone.”

Remarks by Yu Bogong, artist representative

于伯公讲到：“牛圈美术馆的力量就是让大家来到自然中，站立在旷野中，让自然的美，以及对自然的特殊感受让更多人知道，同时也使自身得到一种进化吧，这是我的感受，希望大家在这里能多看看、多聊聊，可能生活中很多的问题、谜题在这样的时刻都可以被自然接纳和包容，这也是自然本身就具有的力量。”

Yu Bogong said:

“The strength of the Herd Stall Art Museum lies in bringing people into nature, standing in the open wilderness, allowing the beauty of nature and our unique perception of it to reach more people, while also enabling a kind of personal evolution. That is my feeling. I hope everyone can take the time to observe and discuss here; perhaps many of life’s questions and puzzles can, in moments like this, be accepted and embraced by nature. This is the power inherent in nature itself.”
