7-Shihua Ma — AV performance Newborn

Shihua Ma is one of China’s leading media artists. He holds a PhD in the field of art and serves as a lecturer at the China Conservatory of Music. He is the author of the first Max/MSP/Jitter programming textbook in China. His works have been presented in China, the United States, and Europe.

The AV performance Newborn guides the audience into the primordial moment of “birth,” traversing the evolution of life and the processes of galactic formation.

The artist employs motion capture technology, unfolding each chapter of the performance through the interaction between body, code, and space.

10-At Cistern X T-Bank Space, this edition features a special guest from China — media artist Shihua Ma (@shihua_ma). He will present the audiovisual performance Newborn, centered on the concept of “birth” — exploring how life, the universe, and rhythm continuously flow and emerge within and around us.

The performance is structured as a four-part ritual framework: spatial explosion, perceptual expansion, temporal flow, and galactic pulses. Each stage unfolds through the interaction between body, code, and space.

The artist employs motion capture technology: his movements are captured in real time via sensors and processed live within the Max/MSP/Jitter environment. Gestures become instructions that drive sound generation, visual transformation, and algorithmic processes.

Ultimately, the performer’s body is transformed into a “living instrument,” and the performance becomes a system in which humans and algorithms co-create music.

Shihua Ma is one of China’s leading media artists. He holds a PhD in Art and is a lecturer at the China Conservatory of Music. He is the author of the first Max/MSP/Jitter programming textbook in China. His works have been presented internationally, including at the Audio Art Festival (Poland), the Central Academy of Fine Arts, as well as conferences and institutions such as ICMC, ISCM, and NIME.

10-在 Cistern X T-Bank 空间，本期特别嘉宾来自中国——媒体艺术家马仕骅（Shihua Ma，@shihua_ma）。他将呈现视听演出 Newborn，围绕“诞生”这一概念展开——生命、宇宙与节奏如何在周围不断流动与生成。

本次演出被构建为一个四段式的仪式结构：空间爆发、感知扩展、时间流动与银河脉冲。每一个阶段都通过身体、代码与空间之间的交互逐步展开。

艺术家使用 motion capture（动作捕捉）技术：其动作被传感器实时采集，并在 Max/MSP/Jitter 环境中进行实时处理与输出。手势成为指令，驱动声音生成、视觉变换与算法生成过程。

最终，表演者的身体被转化为“活体乐器”，演出成为一个人类与算法共同生成音乐的系统。

马仕骅是中国领先的媒体艺术家之一，拥有艺术学博士学位，并任教于中国音乐学院。他是中国首部 Max/MSP/Jitter 编程教材的作者，其作品曾在波兰 Audio Art Festival、中央美术学院及 ICMC、ISCM、NIME 等国际会议与机构中展出：
